Shaun Briscoe named England PDRL Head Coach

He will lead the team in the inaugural PDRL World Cup

Shaun Briscoe, the former England full-back, has been appointed Head Coach of the new England PDRL (Physical Disability Rugby League) Lions team which has been formed ahead of a first PDRL World Cup on home soil in 2021.

Briscoe, whose distinguished playing career included making 11 senior appearances for England and more than 100 for each of Hull’s professional clubs after beginning with his hometown Wigan, has been closely involved in the rapid development of Physical Disability Rugby League since it was first played in this country by Warrington Wolves in 2018.

“When the job application came up, it was a no-brainer to see if I could get it,” said the 37-year-old, who was an assistant coach for England Women on their tour of Papua New Guinea last year.

“To be involved with England is special. To be the first coach of England PDRL, and looking forward to a World Cup next year, means a lot – because of the journey I’ve been on with Warrington and all the elements of PDRL.

“I’m in awe of the skills and courage of the players. To have the chance to play for England will mean the world to them – and the first PDRL World Cup is going to be a fantastic platform for PDRL next year.”

The formation of the PDRL Lions over recent months follows the development of other Community Lions teams at Under-16s, Under-18s, Under-23s, Open Age and in the Women’s game, providing opportunities for those in Community Rugby League to represent their country.

Marc Lovering, the RFL’s Director of Participation and Development, said: “As a Development team at the RFL, we’re particularly proud of the progress made in recent years both by our Community Lions, and by PDRL.

“Both exemplify the direction and spirit of inclusivity and aspirational playing opportunities the sport has to offer.

“So the fact that they have come together is a perfect fit.

“We have run a thorough recruitment process to form this coaching team, and were delighted by the quantity and quality of interest shown. Headed by Shaun Briscoe, who has such a genuine commitment to PDRL, it comes with a wealth of knowledge. As Shaun says, the opportunity to be involved with England will be a huge incentive for everyone in PDRL.”
