About England Rugby League

The England national rugby league team represents England in international rugby league.

England’s first international match took place in 1904.

Prior to 2007, England was predominantly represented by Great Britain in tours, test matches and World Cups.

Since then, England has represented itself in all international rugby league competitions, excluding the Great Britain Lions Tour in 2019.

England traditionally play in red and white and have recently adopted a navy blue colour on their jerseys.

England currently sit third in the IRL World Rankings, behind New Zealand in second and world champions Australia in first.

England Women also sit third in the world rankings, while world champions England Wheelchair occupy first place.

The current England Men head coach is Shaun Wane.

The current England Women head coach is Stuart Barrow.

The current England Wheelchair head coach is Tom Coyd MBE.

The current England Men captain is George Williams.

The current England Women captain is Jodie Cunningham.

The current England Wheelchair captain is Tom Halliwell OBE.

England's most capped player is James Graham with 44 full international appearances.

Ryan Hall is England’s current top try scorer with 40 tries.

Kevin Sinfield is England’s current top points scorer with 224 points.

Kris Radlinski scored five tries in a standalone match against the USA in October 2000. England whitewashed their opponents, 0-110.

More recently, Tommy Makinson scored five tries against Papua New Guinea in the Men's Rugby League World Cup Quarter Final, which took place in 2022. England triumphed 46-6 at The Brick Community Stadium in Wigan.

In 2024, England Women’s Anna Davies also scored five tries in the side’s 82-0 victory over Wales at AMT Headingley Stadium in Leeds.

England Men have made the Rugby League World Cup Final three times, being runners-up in 1975, 1995 and 2017.

England Women have played in the 2008, 2013, 2017 and 2021 Women’s Rugby League World Cups.

England Wheelchair have played in all four Wheelchair World Cup tournaments, winning both the inaugural competition in 2008 and the 2021 edition on home soil, and were runners up in both 2013 and 2017.

The next Rugby League World Cup is set to take place in Australia and Papua New Guinea in 2026.

Shaun Wane's England Men recently faced fierce rivals Australia in the ABK Beer Rugby League Ashes Series - the first since 2003.
Following three blood and thunder battles with the Kangaroos, England fell to a 3-0 series defeat. Their focus now turns to the 2026 Rugby League World Cup.
 
After playing a mid-season international against Wales earlier this year, England Women’s attention also turns to next year's World Cup. 
Player performances in recent Origin fixtures between Lancashire and Yorkshire will help Stuart Barrow determine his national squad selection.
 
England Wheelchair’s Ashes Series tour recently took place Down Under, with Tom Coyd's side coming away with a 2-0 victory against Australia Wheelaroos on the Gold Coast.
