England Students overcome GB Teachers in President's Cup round 2

A clinical second half from England Students saw them emerge with a 44-0 win over Great Britain Teachers in Round Two of the Women's Presidents Cup at Lock Lane.

The first half brought three tries for the Students with them opening the score in the tenth minute through Amelia Brown who dashed 80 metres from a scrum to open the score. Becki Grady landed the first of six goals.

The Teachers missed an opportunity for points after the ball went wide to the right but the last pass couldn't find wing Alexandra Simpson.

Sophia Williams then broke away for the Students but was valiantly chased down by Bethany Pickernell and Georgie Taylor. This only delayed the inevitable as some nice build-up was turned into a try by Emily Baggaley with Grady again on target to make it 12-0 after 22 minutes.

The Students scored their third try on the half hour mark with a swirling high kick from Gabi Leigh that the Teachers full back was unable to collect and was swiftly taken in by Becky Grady to race in score under the posts, Grady converted and the students went into half time with an 18-0 advantage.

The second half saw the Students put five more tries on the board as they took control.

Four minutes into the new half, a loose pass from Dani Waters on the right was collected by Chloe Billington who weaved into midfield and then sped away from the defence over 70 metres to touch down wide on the left. This went unconverted.

The students continued to plug away with their defence committed, and big efforts came from second rows Danielle Solly and Alisha Clayton. With their greater athleticism, however, Students made their chances count as Katy Mottershead dashed through the middle after 52 minutes.

Another Teachers chance went the way of Simpson from an Ellie Turner kick but the defence was too good. Then from another promising position for the teachers, Brown caught a kick and glided down the touchline from 90 metres to score her second at the other end.

Billington also got her second before a late cameo from Leeds Rhinos Betfred Challenge Cup player of the match Zoe Hornby caught the eye, including a long-range try ten minutes from time.

Grady wrapped up the scoring with her last goal and the Students now go into preparation for the decider against UK Armed Forces at Leigh Miners Rangers on June 1 in a 7.00pm kick off.
