Manchester Swinton Lionesses Retain Challenge Shield After Thrilling Final Against Warrington Wolves

Manchester Swinton Lionesses retained their Challenge Shield title with a hard-fought 18-10 victory over Warrington Wolves in a fiercely contested final between two of the National Championship’s strongest sides. 

With both teams having previously topped the league table this season and pushing for Women’s Super League promotion, the opening exchanges made it clear that this would be a closely matched contest. Warrington started brightly in attack, but they were met by a resolute Swinton defence that held firm under early pressure. 

The intensity of the rivalry was evident from the first whistle, with heated carries, committed tackles and passionate defensive efforts from both sides. Momentum shifted throughout the first half as each team enjoyed spells on top, showcasing the quality and determination that had taken them to the final. 

Swinton were the first to break the deadlock when Grace Arrowsmith crossed for the opening try. The conversion was missed, but the Lionesses led 4-0 and soon extended their advantage through an outstanding solo effort from Grace Pritchard, whose pace helped Swinton move into a 10-0 lead. 

Warrington responded strongly, with Evie Williams scoring to reduce the deficit. Although the conversion was missed, the Wolves had found their way back into the contest at 10-4. Their momentum continued shortly afterwards as they scored again, before Michelle Davies successfully converted to bring the score level at 10-10. 

Strong carries and physical tackles from both teams underlined just how tight the final had become, and the sides went into half-time locked at 10-10. 

Swinton struck early in the second half when Pritchard crossed for her second try of the match, restoring the Lionesses’ lead at 14-10. With a strong crowd turnout backing both teams, the atmosphere grew as the final entered its decisive stages. 

The contest took another dramatic turn when Swinton try-scorer Arrowsmith was shown a yellow card, leaving the Lionesses down to 12 players for the remainder of the half. Despite the setback, Swinton responded in superb fashion and found a way to score again while down one player. 

The final try of the game completed a brilliant hat-trick for speedster Grace Pritchard, sealing an 18-10 victory for Swinton and confirming that the Lionesses would retain their Challenge Shield crown.
