Hull FC Women commended widely for swift action after assisting crash victims on M62
On Sunday 29 March, the Hull FC Women’s team were travelling to compete in the second round of the Women’s Challenge Shield competition against Rochdale Hornets when they witnessed a vehicle leaving the road on the M62 en route to their fixture.
Without hesitation, players and staff immediately stopped to help. They helped free individuals from a vehicle that had come to rest partly submerged in water in a roadside ditch. The group also administered first aid at the scene and ensured that oncoming motorway traffic safely avoided the area before contacting the emergency services and confirming that further help was on the way.
Thankfully, no one involved in the incident suffered serious injuries, though those affected were taken to hospital as a precaution.
Following the incident, the team left the scene and resiliently went on to claim a 4–20 victory in Rochdale on Sunday afternoon, progressing to the third round of the Women’s Challenge Shield.
Hull FC Women’s Head Coach, Pete Grayburn, said:
“On the way to a fixture against Rochdale, we found ourselves unexpectedly responding to a crash on the M62. In that moment, we drew on the same values we pride ourselves on as a Rugby League club which are resilience, teamwork, and togetherness. Without hesitation, everyone came together, quickly assessed the situation, and prioritised safety for all involved.
“Using strong communication and trust in one another, we organised ourselves efficiently. Some members of the group secured the area and managed the immediate risks, while others provided comfort and first aid to those injured.
“Our ability to stay calm under pressure and support each other allowed us to act with confidence and care in what was a frightening and chaotic situation.
“The experience highlighted the strength of the bond we have as a group of players and staff. By working together, we were able to provide meaningful assistance and reassurance at a critical moment, demonstrating that our teamwork extends far beyond the pitch.
“I was extremely proud of the efforts of my players and staff throughout the ordeal. Speaking with the emergency services afterwards, they were full of praise and gratitude for the group’s actions.
“After the incident, the group supported one another, refocused on the task ahead, and showed real courage and character. Despite arriving later than scheduled, the team demonstrated true grit and determination and went on to beat a strong Rochdale side 20–4.
“On behalf of the Club and the Women’s programme at Hull FC, I would like to thank the thousands of messages of support we have received from all over the world. The news has gone viral and we’ve received messages from Australia to France and everywhere in between, and we are very grateful.”
