Cardiff Demons to take on London Broncos in the Southern Women’s Championship Grand Final this Saturday
The Southern Women’s Championship will come to a dramatic conclusion this Saturday (7 September) when Cardiff Demons take on title holders London Broncos (KO 2pm).
Saturday’s fixture has added significance with the Champions facing off against their Northern counterparts on Sunday 29 September for the right to take on the bottom team in the Betfred Women’s Super League (BWSL) for a place in the top flight.
London Broncos captain, Courtney Treco, is relishing the chance to avenge their 22-0 loss against their fierce rivals earlier this season: “We’re a mix of excited and nervous because playing Cardiff Demons is always a tough challenge but we’re looking forward to the task. The last time we played at their place we lost, so we want to go back and show them what we’ve got.
The Broncos pulled off a stunning 22-10 win over Cardiff in the 2023 Grand Final to end their two-year grip on the competition and Treco knows how much another win would mean to her team: “To win the title back-to-back would be an incredible experience, we’ve worked really hard to improve this year - we’ve had more fresh faces come in and more people start to buy into the game of Rugby League.
“Being able to build on last year and get that win would mean the world to the girl’s because we know then that opens the door to even greater opportunities like putting our hand in for the BWSL.”
Cardiff Demons have enjoyed another record-breaking campaign having progressed to the quarter finals of the Betfred Challenge Cup for a second year and defeating St Helens in the Women’s Nines.
The sky is the limit for the Demons according to Kaitlin Hubbert: “Constant improvement is always the aim for any team - especially those competing at an elite level. After our solid run in the Challenge Cup and Women’s Nines we are seeing progressive development in our side which is reflecting in our results.
“However, our ambitions as a club are set high so we aren’t naive to the work we must put in to achieve these and we won’t shy away from these challenges.”
With Wales recently securing their place at the 2026 Rugby League World Cup, Hubbert believes that progressing into the BWSL could catapult the Demons to new heights: “It would mean a lot for the club to not only be the only Welsh side in the Super League but also the only Southern side; this is something we feel passionately about representing and staying true too.
“If we were to be promoted, I feel as though this could inspire the next generation of Women’s Rugby League players in this country and it would be great for us to achieve that in the year running up to Wales making their debut in the Rugby League World Cup.”
The Southern Women’s Championship Grand Final will take place at Cardiff University Playing Fields from 2pm with entrance on Saturday just £3 for over 16s. The Champions will then face the winner of the Northern competition on Sunday 29 September in the National Championship Final at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham (KO TBC).
