It’s Northumbria versus Liverpool in the Women’s University Winter League Final

Northumbria will face Liverpool in the Women’s University Winter League Final this Sunday (17 March) with Featherstone’s Millennium Stadium set to host the inaugural event.

The tournament was introduced by the RFL towards the end of 2023 to serve as an opportunity for new and current players to represent their University in Rugby League in a regular competition and the very first champion will be crowned on Sunday.

Northumbria University hosted the University of Liverpool at Coach Lane Campus in the opening round of the competition back in November with Sophie Price scoring two fine tries for the home side as they came out 12-4 victors in a closely fought game.

Both sides then went on to face teams from across the UK in a round robin tournament before qualifying for Sunday’s showstopper via the play-offs.

The RFL’s National Education Manager, Andrea Murray, explains:

“We are really looking forward to the first Women’s University Winter League Final in Featherstone this Sunday – both teams have impressed throughout the tournament so it should be an end-to-end game.

“We know there is a lot of potential and appetite for Women’s Rugby League within the higher education sector and the success of the inaugural Women’s University Winter League shows that. This league is the first step towards creating an official BUCS offering for female Rugby League, and hopefully we’ll see more teams involved off the back of this first season.”

The Women’s University Winter League Final will take place at Featherstone’s Millenium Stadium (KO 1pm) with tickets available at the turnstile’s priced at £3 for adults and £1 for children, please note that payment is cash only.
