On a Super Saturday for inclusion in Rugby League, Leeds Rhinos secured the first place in the 2023 Betfred Wheelchair Super League Grand Final, while Wakefield Trinity and Warrington Wolves both lifted trophies as the Physical Disability Super League season ended with a festival in Sheffield.
The Rhinos beat their old rivals Halifax Panthers 54-44 in a heavyweight semi final at The Edge in Leeds, with Josh Butler continuing his outstanding season by scoring five of their tries.
It was sweet revenge for Leeds against the team who had beaten them in last year’s Grand Final, and who also inflicted their first league defeat of the season only last weekend.
The Rhinos now have two weeks to prepare for the Grand Final at the Manchester Basketball Centre in Belle Vue on Sunday October 15 – and will discover their opponents next Sunday when London Roosters host Wigan Warriors at the University of East London’s Sportsdock.
Leeds and Wigan were among eight clubs involved in the PDRL Festival at Sheffield Hallam University earlier in the day, which ended with Warrington Wolves reclaiming the Super League title with a Grand Final win against Wakefield – despite the absence of Adam Hills, who was otherwise engaged presenting Channel 4’s coverage of the Betfred Super League Play-Off at St Helens.
Wakefield had beaten their local rivals Castleford in a thrilling semi final, and were presented with the League Leaders’ Shield as a reward for their consistency through the season.
