Student Rugby League Four Nations 2023 Announced

Student Rugby League Four Nations 2023 Announced

The fixtures for the 2023 Student Rugby League Four Nations have been announced, with Sardis Road in Pontypridd hosting the games, a repeat of the 2018 tournament hosted by Wales.

The first game kicks off on Sunday 9th July when Ireland face England (1.30pm) before Wales face Scotland at 5pm.

Day two is on Wednesday 12th July with a clash between the auld enemies England and Scotland at 3.30pm before the hosts tackle Ireland at 7pm.

The final day of action is Saturday 15th July, with Scotland v Ireland taking place at 1.30pm before Wales v England concludes the tournament at 5pm.

This will be the seventeenth Student Rugby League 17th staging of the Four Nations, with reigning champions England looking to add a fourteenth title.

Wales are the only other nation to have won the trophy, last doing so in 2012 and previously in 2009 and 2004 and whilst neither Scotland or Ireland have taken a title, Scotland has achieved second place in 2018 and 2019 and will be looking to push for victory this time around.

“Our preparation for the Four Nations so far has been excellent” noted Kevin Deighton, England Universities Head Coach. “We recorded three victories in the RFL President’s Cup and played some very exciting rugby and showed a very strong determination to defend.”

Deighton will reduce his current 26-man squad down to 20 for the tournament, with a final friendly game against HM Prison Service, 7pm Wednesday 7th June at Sharlston Rovers, being used as a last chance to impress.

“In an ideal world we would take all 26 players to the Four Nations but having reduce the squad means the players push each other for places and there are some tough decisions to be made” Deighton added.

“This year’s group are very talented and I am looking forward to seeing how they go once we get into the international environment.”
