Totally Wicked Stadium to host world record attempt in aid of MND Association

St Helens’ Totally Wicked Stadium is the venue next week (Saturday 29 April) for a world record attempt in aid of the MND Association.

Lifelong Saints fan Ian Cummings, together with a groups of friends, will aim to beat the world record for furthest distance travelled in a golf buggy in 24 hours – currently standing at 120 miles (193km) – by doing continuous laps around the stadium.

Ian, 44, has been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease – the degenerative condition which affects the nerves in the brain and spinal cord, and which will be familiar to Rugby League supporters everywhere through the former Leeds Rhinos and England half-back Rob Burrow who was diagnosed with MND in 2019.

Despite failing health, the former Haydock ARL player is determined to take part in the world record attempt – and Rugby League fans can support his efforts on behalf the MND Association at Ian Cummings is fundraising for Motor Neurone Disease Association (justgiving.com.

"Ian is a big Saints fan”, explained friend and organiser Mark Abbott to the St Helens Star, “and the team at Saints have been absolutely amazing. They have been so accommodating in helping us set it up and allowed us to do a trial run at the ground. Ian's an immensely popular guy and I don't think he realised how much people want to help. We're trying to build as much momentum until April and then completely smash the record so no one else bothers trying to attempt it!"

Ian and his friends also paid special mention to Carryway Golf Buggy hire, who offered their buggies free of charge, as well as giving expertise on how to keep things moving for the full day.
