Betfred Women Super League | Round 6 Preview

Round six of the Betfred Women’s Super League gets underway on Sunday afternoon as St Helens Women host Huddersfield Giants, live on the Our League app. The fixture kicks-off at 2:00 PM and will be played at St Helens’ Totally Wicked Stadium.

St Helens entertained many last weekend live on Sky Sports when they faced Leeds Rhinos, as part of a double header with St Helens Men hosting Leeds. The Saints got off to a strong start with an early try from Jodie Cunningham. Zoe Harris and Amy Hardcastle extended the St Helens advantage as they led 14-0 after 22 minutes. Leeds levelled the match, before Tara Jones re-established the host’s lead. Fran Goldthrop scored three minutes from the final whistle to win the match for Leeds. Derek Hardman’s side are third in the table with one win from their three fixtures. Their one victory came in round one when they defeated Wigan Warriors 44-0.

Huddersfield Giants will be looking for their first Betfred Women’s Super League success of the 2022 season on Sunday. The Giants started their league campaign in tough fashion with a 50-6 defeat to current league leaders and unbeaten side, York City Knights. In the following week, they faced a tough Leeds Rhinos outfit at Headingley Stadium and were beaten 60-4. In their last fixture they faced Wigan Warriors at home. Wigan got off to a strong start racing into a 20-0 lead at the break. However, Huddersfield fought back to win the second half 18-10, but ultimately lost the match 30-18.

The other fixture in Group One sees Wigan Warriors welcome Leeds Rhinos to Robin Park on Sunday afternoon. The match gets underway at 2:00 PM.

Wigan come into Sunday’s match in fourth position of Group One with one success in their opening three matches. After losing their opening Betfred Women’s Super League match to local rivals St Helens 44-0, however, they bounced back in their second match with an away win at Huddersfield. Rebecca Greenfield opened the scoring for Wigan as they raced into a 20-0 lead at half-time. Two second half tries, secured their first win in the league. They were defeated 46-0 on Sunday against York City Knights.

Leeds will go into Sunday’s match with confidence after their late victory over St Helens. Lois Forsell’s side completed an impressive come back with a try from England international Caitlin Beevers, as well as a double including the match winner from fellow England star Fran Goldthorp.

Goldthorp impressed in their opening league fixture as she completed a second half hat-trick as part of Leeds’ 60-4 victory over Huddersfield. In the following match, they were defeated 24-10 away against York at their LNER Community Stadium.

Group 2 gets underway on Sunday afternoon with a West Yorkshire derby. Wakefield Trinity welcome local rivals, Castleford Tigers, to the Be Well Support Stadium. Kick-off is at 12 and precedes Wakefield’s Men Betfred Super League clash with the Wigan Warriors.

Trinity currently sits bottom of the table after losing their opening four Group 2 fixtures. In their first match, they contested well but were defeated 28-14 away at Leigh Miners. Since then, they have lost away to Warrington Wolves and Featherstone Rovers, as well as at home to Bradford Bulls. Sunday will be an opportunity to overtake Castleford and move up the Group two table.

Castleford also go into Sunday’s match without a league win in 2022. Just like Wakefield, they have also been defeated by Featherstone Rovers and Bradford Bulls. In their last fixture, Castleford were defeated 46-10 away against Barrow at Craven Park.

The second match of Group two will be at Odsal with kick-off at 12:15 PM, with the Bradford Bulls hosting Barrow Raiders. The fixture is part of a double header with the Bradford Bulls men side taking on Leigh Centurions at 3:00 PM.

From their five league matches this year, Bradford have won three of their Group two matches. The Bulls lost their opening league fixture to Featherstone; however, they were in good form in the following fixtures. Their 12-8 home success against Leigh Miners with a 28-10 win over Wakefield. Bradford made it three in a row when emphatically defeating Castleford 52-0 at Odsal. In their latest fixture, they were defeated 54-0 at Odsal by currently league leaders, Warrington Wolves.

The final fixture of the weekend sees league leaders, Warrington Wolves, hosting Leigh Miners Rangers. The match is at the Halliwell Jones Stadium with kick-off at 12:30 PM. The fixture is part of a double header as Warrington Wolves Men face Salford Red Devils at 3:00 PM.

Lee Westwood’s side have asserted themselves as one of the front runners from Group 2. The Wolves have only conceded six points in their opening four matches. In attack they have been averaging 55 points a game, having scored 220 points already this season. After defeating Barrow 32-6 in round one, Warrington have not conceded a single point. Their 86-0 victory against Wakefield has been followed up with 48-0 win over Featherstone and a 54-0 against Bradford last Sunday. Warrington will be looking to keep their 100% record intact.

Leigh Miners will be looking for their second Group Two success on Sunday. After recording an opening round success with a 28-14 victory against Wakefield, Miners have failed to win another, however, they have gone close on a couple of occasions. They have lost 12-8 against Bradford and 14-8 to third placed Barrow.
