Betfred Super League Round 11 round-up

Betfred Super League Round 11 round-up

Jamie Jones-Buchanan will hand over a winning team to new head coach Rohan Smith after guiding Leeds Rhinos to a 12-0 Betfred Super League victory over Hull KR in his last match as interim boss.

Jones-Buchanan, who stepped into the role following the departure of Richard Agar, has seen the Rhinos take five points from their last four matches to pull five points clear of bottom club Toulouse Olympique.

He is now preparing to hand over the reins to Smith, who is due to arrive from Australia on Tuesday and watched remotely as Leeds dealt a blow to the team coached by his uncle Tony.

The buoyant Robins went into the game looking to set a club record of seven straight Super League wins but tries from Matt Prior and Morgan Gannon earned the injury-ravaged hosts a second successive victory.

To compound their misery, Rovers lost full-back Lachlan Coote with a head injury early in the second half which makes him doubtful for next Saturday's Challenge Cup semi-final against Huddersfield.

The Giants warmed up for the cup clash with a 14-12 win over Wakefield Trinity on Thursday night, their first win at Belle Vue since 2015.

Ian Watson's men trailed 12-4 at the interval but turned the game around thanks to second-half tries from Luke Yates and Ricky Leutele, both crafted by French scrum-half Theo Fages.

The other semi-finalists, Wigan Warriors and St Helens, also enjoyed round 11 victories but in contrasting fashion.

Iain Thornley and Liam Marshall scored two tries apiece as Wigan eased to a comfortable 40-22 win over Warrington Wolves.

Bevan French, Ethan Havard and Liam Farrell also touched down as Wigan ran in seven tries, with Harry Smith landing six goals.

Saints needed a brilliant try-saving tackle from Morgan Knowles and two late penalty goals from Tommy Makinson to help them maintain their 42-year unbeaten home record against Salford Red Devils and stay top of the table.

Makinson's goals made it 14-10 but the champions were given a last-minute scare when Salford’s Chris Atkin raced clear following an interception, only for Knowles to track back and haul him down short of the line.

A bicep injury for St Helens half-back Jonny Lomax took some of the shine off the win but coach Kristian Woolf is hopeful the England international will be fit for the semi-final against the Warriors.

Elsewhere, centre Matthieu Laguerre scored a hat-trick of tries to help Catalans Dragons to an emphatic 44-12 victory over Castleford Tigers while Darnell McIntosh and Connor Wynne also scored three apiece in Hull FC's 48-12 demolition of Toulouse Olympique.

The Black and Whites scored nine tries, including one from young hooker Denive Balmforth on his debut, to clinch a third successive win that lifts them back into the top four.
