Rochdale Hornets beat Midlands in Betfred Challenge Cup

Rochdale Hornets progressed to Round Three of the 2022 Betfred Challenge Cup with a 36-16 victory over fellow Betfred League One side Midlands Hurricanes, live on BBC Sport, on Sunday afternoon.

Rochdale opened the scoring just before the 20-minute mark as Lewis Sheridan threw a clever dummy before rounding the Midlands defence.

This would be the first of four first half tries for the Hornets as Ben Calland, Gregg McNally and Cobi Green all went over in an eight-minute spell.

However, the Hurricanes would close the gap going into the break thanks to tries from Nathan Newbound and Hadyn Freeman as Rochdale’s Luke Fowden was shown a yellow card.

It was the Hornets who scored first after the break as Cian Tyrer swooped on a low Sheridan kick, but they would soon find themselves a man down again for the remainder of the game this time around as Joe Taira saw red for a shoulder charge.

Benn Hardcastle jinked his way through just after the hour-mark to give the Hurricanes hope but Rochdale replied through Dan Nixon and Tom Ashton.
