Coral Women's Challenge Cup Quarter Final Preview

Coral Women's Challenge Cup Quarter Final Preview

By Charlotte Fletcher

The Coral Women’s Challenge Cup reaches its quarter-final stage this Sunday (23 June). Four mouth-watering ties include the big derby between St Helens and Wigan Warriors, which will be broadcast live on the RFL’s Our League app.

The last eight teams are chasing a semi-final spot and the chance of a cup final appearance at the University of Bolton Stadium on 27 July as part of a triple-header which also includes both Coral Challenge Cup semi-finals.

St Helens v Wigan Warriors | 12:00pm KO | Live on Our League

St Helens entertain reigning Women’s Super League Champions and fierce local rivals Wigan Warriors at the Totally Wicked Stadium in the stand-out tie of the round.

The likes of Faye Gaskin (St Helens) and Vicky Molyneux (Wigan) were on the same Lancashire side for last weekend’s dramatic Origin clash with Yorkshire. On Sunday they’ll put county comradeship aside as they bid to take their respective sides to the semi-finals.

Saints, who earlier this season notched an impressive opening day derby win, booked their quarter-final place courtesy of the biggest score of the second round – a 96-0 defeat of Championship team Stanningley.

Wigan progressed on the back of a hard-earned 50-14 win against the Army and come in to the game on the back of a run of Super League wins that have kept up the pressure on the top four, where second-placed St Helens are hot on Castleford’s heels. However, form means nothing in a local derby – which way will this one swing?

Leeds Rhinos v Warrington Wolves |12:00pm KO

Holders Leeds Rhinos have a high noon showdown on Sunday with Championship side Warrington Wolves with strong hopes of progressing to the semi-final stage of the competition.

The Rhinos ran away with the game when they faced York City Knights in the second round, racking up a 70-0 score line on the road. Warrington progressed courtesy of a much tighter 38-18 victory over fellow Championship side Barrow.

Leeds sit third in the Super League as they keep up the chase with St Helens and Castleford for the top spot. Warrington also sit third in the Championship, just a point behind first place. Both sides will be hoping for an important victory on Sunday afternoon – can Warrington pull off a shock or can holders Leeds keep two hands on their trophy?

Keighley Albion v Wakefield Trinity | 2:00pm KO

Keighley Albion, the only remaining League One club still in the competition, welcome Super League side Wakefield as they look to pull off a potential cup upset.

Wakefield earned a respectable 24-6 victory over a persistent Widnes Vikings side, whilst Keighley put on a good attacking display to see off Halifax 50-9 in the previous round.

Hosts Keighley may currently rank eleven places lower than their opposition Wakefield, who are at the foot end of the Super League table, but following a healthy victory in the previous round will be well up for the battle. Wakefield will be hoping to keep their chances of some silverware in firm sight though, in what could be an end-to-end tie.

Castleford Tigers v Bradford Bulls | 2:00pm KO

Women’s Super League table-toppers Castleford welcome Bradford Bulls to the jungle as they look to continue their impressive form in 2019 against fellow Super League opposition.

The Tigers were too strong for Featherstone Rovers in the Our League featured tie of the second round, running away with a 48-4 victory. Bradford were just as dominant though, as they put a 56-0 score on RAF Ladies.

Castleford suffered heartbreak in last year’s Challenge Cup final at the Halliwell Jones Stadium when Leeds took the win in a tight contest, but are in formidable form in 2019 and will be looking to make amends from last year’s campaign. 2017 Challenge Cup winners, Bradford, are also in fine fettle in the Super League so far and will be hoping to put a dent in the Tigers hopes of a trophy on Sunday afternoon.
