The NRL season restarted this past weekend and an inspired performance from England’s George Williams helped Canberra Raiders to an impressive 6-22 victory over Melbourne Storm at AAMI Park.
Williams notched two try-assists inside the first forty minutes to help the Raiders establish a 12-point half-time lead; the Storm’s biggest home deficit at the interval for almost six years.
The former Wigan half-back threw a sublime looping pass for winger Nick Cotric to score before slicing through the Storm’s defensive line and finding a supporting Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad just before the break. Williams’ performance was capped off in the second half with a sensational defensive effort on Ryan Papenhuyzen.
England duo Josh Hodgson and Elliot Whitehead also featured for the Raiders with Hodgson’s kicking game a particular highlight forcing a goal line drop-out and kicking a 40-20. The hooker also made more tackles than any other Canberra player with 37.
Tom Burgess was on the scoresheet for South Sydney on Friday but couldn’t prevent his side falling to defeat against rivals Sydney Roosters at Bankwest Stadium.
Burgess’ effort on the hour-mark sealed a strong attacking display from the prop-forward in which he ran for 145 metres from 15 carries, more than other any Rabbitohs forward.
It was a tough day at the office for James Graham’s St George Illawarra Dragons side as they suffered an 18-0 defeat at the hands of New Zealand Warriors.
The Raiders’ English contingent will battle Newcastle Knights next Sunday (7:05am) while Burgess is set to face Melbourne Storm on Friday (10:55am) and Graham’s Dragons will finish Round Four on Monday (7:05am) against Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs. All the games will be broadcast live on Sky Sports.
