Official Report / Commentary

John Kear masterminded another Coral Challenge Cup shock by guiding Betfred Championship club Bradford Bulls to a 24-22 win over Leeds Rhinos in a gripping sixth-round tie at Odsal.

Kear took Sheffield Eagles and Hull FC to cup final glory and his part-time Bulls team are now two wins away from an unlikely trip to Wembley after compounding more misery on the Rhinos in the wake of the sacking of Dave Furner.

Tuimoala Lolohea and Callum McLelland put Leeds into 12-4 lead after 14 minutes, with Dalton Grant hitting back for the Bulls.

However, Bradford scored 18 unanswered points before half-time after tries from Jake Webster, Sam Hallas and Mikey Wood, with Rowan Milnes adding three kicks while Liam Sutcliffe responded for Leeds with a 40th-minute penalty to reduce the deficit to 22-14.

The Bulls' lead was trimmed to four points when Harry Newman crossed 10 minutes into the second half, but a Milnes penalty increased Bradford's advantage to 24-18.

And that kick proved vital when Tom Briscoe did fantastic to touch down in the corner with six minutes remaining to give Sutcliffe the chance level, but his touchline conversion rattled the left post and back out as Bradford held on for a place in the quarter-finals.

"I'm delighted with the squad's efforts," Kear said. "They were magnificent.

"They have created memories. When they meet in 20 years time they will shake hands and say 'remember that Leeds game?' You're in sport for outcomes and days like today.

"I am chuffed for the fans who have had thin and thinner times. We've had some good cup wins but obviously today is a very, very special one."

Opposite number Richard Agar reflected: "We probably got what we deserved. If we'd got a draw at the end it would probably have been a bit unjust.

"We looked legless, we couldn't win anywhere near enough tackles. It's been symptomatic of the season so far and we took it to a whole new level."
