Luis Domingos eager to create more World Cup memories with England Wheelchair
England Wheelchair international Luis Domingos is eager to create more memories in Australia as England bid to retain their World Cup crown.
The reigning world champions head Down Under this week looking to defend the title they won in dramatic fashion, when a last-gasp Tom Halliwell OBE’s try secured victory over France in the previous World Cup Final.
Tom Coyd MBE’s England will travel full of confidence after a successful Ashes campaign in Australia last year, where they secured a 2-0 series victory. Domingos was part of that squad and featured in the second Test, an experience that has only strengthened his desire to represent his country on the biggest stage once again:
“I'm so excited. It’s been a long time now from last year from the Ashes and the work just kept going.
“I'm excited to put everything we've been training, all memories we managed to create and all the lessons into practice and I can't wait. I can't wait to be there and go there with the boys."
His journey to the England setup has been a unique one, with Domingos first competing internationally in wheelchair basketball for Portugal before discovering his passion for rugby league:
“My journey started in 2016 playing basketball. I had an amazing time. I had the privilege to represent Portugal.
“Then I think it was in 2018 when I discovered rugby league. I had a season with Leeds Rhinos, but then I went into basketball again.
“But now, being back in this sport, I think people saw a little spark in me, and seeing the passion everyone has for rugby league, as well as being around the England squad, just made me very curious and excited to be in the sport.”
While rivalries dominate the domestic season, the chance to pull on an England shirt brings players together with one common goal:
“I’m so excited. We spend the year competing against each other in the Wheelchair Super League, but now is the moment to be united and to represent the nation. We are a family and we’re there to do a job, have fun and create more memories.”
“We recently had a training camp with the juniors who came to visit and see how we train and everything. To see their smiles and how excited they were to be there with us, makes us want to create that memory for them.
“On the big stage, I want to create a memory that I can remember and in 20 years say, ‘I've been there and I was there with my teammates and my family.’ There’s nothing better than that.”
Domingos will also be able to lean on several experienced teammates who were part of England’s World Cup-winning side, with senior players helping to maintain the standards and culture within the squad:
“The guys are just so helpful, you know. People like Jack [Brown]. I knew Jack from basketball, when I started.
“You look at them and they're just so calm and composed. They’re passionate people about, not just the sport, but about people. They embrace me into the culture and the sport, and I'm lucky to be there. It's a privilege to be around these guys."
Despite England's status as defending champions, Domingos insists the squad is focused on what lies ahead rather than what has already been achieved.
“The goal for the team, well, it would be very easy to say we’re defending, but we’re going there to win.”
“Life is about phases. And when you complete one, you have to look forward for the next one.
“We want to go there show personality, show our togetherness and show everything we've been working for, but also have fun, create memories and bring another one [World Cup] home. I'm very excited.”
