Sheffield Eagles and Oldham will join forces on Saturday 21st March to raise awareness for World Down Syndrome Day 2026 by wearing “odd socks” during their Betfred Championship Round 7 clash.
Players from both clubs will step onto the field with one home sock and one away sock, symbolising the beauty of difference and inclusion, alongside the RFL Match Officials, who will also wear odd socks for the game.
World Down Syndrome Day is observed annually on the 21st March, a date chosen to highlight the unique 21st chromosome, which is present in triplicate in people with Down’s syndrome. The “odd socks” initiative takes inspiration from the chromosome’s sock-like appearance and has become a universal symbol of celebrating diversity and raising awareness about Down syndrome.
The Rugby League community has long been committed to promoting inclusion, and this initiative reinforces that ethos: difference is embraced, and everyone has a place in the sport.
The celebrations will extend beyond the men’s game against Oldham. Sheffield Eagles’ PDRL team will participate in the initiative on the same day during their curtain-raiser match alongside Halifax Panthers against Wigan Warriors at the Steel City Stadium.
In addition, the Wheelchair team, who travel to face York Knights, will show their support on the same day. The Women’s team will carry the message forward a day later when they face Thatto Heath Crusaders in Round 1 of the Women’s Challenge Shield.
As part of this, the club and the Eagles Foundation will also be getting involved with Sheffield Mencap’s ‘Rock Your Socks’ campaign, and are asking supporters across that weekend to get involved and share their photos on Sheffield's social media channels.
By wearing your funkiest, most eye-catching socks on Saturday March 21st you can start a conversation about learning disabilities and show your support. Make sure you follow Sheffield Mencap and Gateway on social media (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn) and share photos and videos of you rocking your socks tagged with #RockYourSocksSheffield.
By joining together across multiple teams and fixtures, Sheffield Eagles hope to amplify awareness of Down syndrome and promote a culture of inclusion and respect within rugby league and beyond.
