Wembley Ashes reaction from George Williams

Wembley Ashes reaction from George Williams

"We’ve got lots to work on, but we’ve got two more games which is the good part of it. We need to save the series," declares the England skipper...

England captain George Williams gave his honest post-match thoughts after his team suffered defeat in the opening ABK Beer Ashes Test at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.

“We made too many errors and Australia were too good," Williams spoke highly of his opposition.

"Fair to play to them. We placed a lot of emphasis on Wembley, and we’ve worked hard to get to where we’re at, so it's really disappointing.

“We were chasing our tails. We knew we had a job on our hands at 14-0 down, and what we did in the first half really burnt out our energy. We didn’t have too much ball.

“We knew what we needed to do, but an opposition of their quality will punish you when you aren’t doing your job.

“We didn’t get them. Games at this level are all about small margins and Australia did it better.

“They finished their tries, and we didn’t.”

But the series isn’t over just yet, with England able to rectify their Wembley wrongs in the Second Test in Liverpool next Saturday (1 November), in front of a capacity crowd.

And Williams believes his side can come back stronger but will need the England fans behind them and in full support at Everton's Hill Dickinson Stadium:

“We’ve got lots to work on, but we’ve got two more games which is the good part of it.

“We play them again next week, so there’s not too much to be down about and we’ll crack on.

“We’ve definitely got to improve, but Australia will too now they’ve got a good game under their belt.

“We have a good job on our hands at Everton next week, it’s sold out and we’ll need the English crowd to bring us home because we need to save the series.”
