Yorkshire earn 2-0 victory in 2025 Academy Origin

Yorkshire re-enforced their dominance over Lancashire at Academy level with a second convincing win of the summer to secure the Origin series 2-0.

The White Rose team scored seven tries to two, despite having two players sin-binned, in a near repeat of their 42-10 victory in the year’s previous encounter in Castleford.

Yorkshire took an early lead through Zac Lloyd, the Leeds Rhinos loose forward who was sent over by the Wakefield Trinity prop Ellis Lingard.

They continued to dominate but Lancashire defended bravely, and there was a hint of a change in the balance of power when Yorkshire’s centre Harley Thomas was the first player sin-binned for a moment of petulance, and the Red Rose capitalised with a slick scrum move which ended with the Warrington centre Lachlan Webster sending the Wigan wing Sam Dickenson over on the right.

But Yorkshire re-established control and secured a 12-4 half-time lead when Lloyd worked a classic run-around for Warrington’s Isaac Holdsworth to score.

And they stretched further ahead with a slick try early in the second half which was finished by the Leeds centre Oscar Brown – Thomas adding a fine conversion to extend the lead to 18-4.

Lloyd and Callum Kemp, the brothers from Hull FC who were lively throughout from full-back and scrum half respectively, combined superbly to send the Leeds hooker Joe Diskin over for Yorkshire’s fourth try.

George Brown then stretched over from acting half, and a sweeping handling move ended with Marcus Qareqare crossing in the left corner.

Shea O’Connor, a Wigan forward who impressed from Lancashire’s interchange bench, surged over from close range for a deserved try which Warrington’s Ewan Irwin converted to reduce the deficit to 34-10.

But Yorkshire had the last word when Callum Kemp dummied over, Thomas landing his sixth goals from seven attempts – although they ended the match with 12 players after Lingard was binned for a dangerous tackle on O’Connor.

Yorkshire: Tries – Lloyd, Holdsworth, O Brown, Diskin, G Brown, Qareqare, C Kemp; Goals – Thomas 6.

Lancashire: Tries – Dickenson, O’Connor; Goal – Irwin.
