There will be a minute’s silence before all Community Rugby League fixtures this weekend to mourn the loss of Cliff Tamou, a highly respected and much-loved Match Official, community coach and development officer in the Community game, who died at the age of 58 last Thursday.
Cliff moved to the UK from New Zealand 30 years ago and dedicated much of his life to Rugby League. He initially took up coaching before transitioning to refereeing in the North West, where he became a valued member of the Leigh RL Referees Society and served for many years as Development Officer.
A highly regarded official at the community level across the country, Cliff officiated in the National Conference League and was well respected in the Masters and Wheelchair game. However, it was in the North West Competitions where he truly felt at home, earning recognition as one of the leading officials over the past 25 years.
Steve Abel, Chairman of Leigh RLRS and a close friend, paid tribute:
"Cliff was a true gentleman— a loving husband, father, grandfather, godfather, brother, and friend. He will be greatly missed by everyone whose life he touched. I first met him in 2000, and it was clear how much he loved Rugby League, but his family always came first. He would do anything for anyone and was highly regarded by players, coaches, and spectators alike. For the past 15 years, he dedicated himself to mentoring younger officials in Leigh, leaving an impact that will never be forgotten."
Phil Bentham, the RFL’s Head of Match Officials, also spoke of Cliff’s unwavering dedication to supporting young referees.
“He always went the extra mile and was selfless in putting others above himself, making him both respected by colleagues and deeply loved throughout the Rugby League community. The widespread tributes pouring in are a testament to the lasting impact he had on those around him.
“We extend our deepest sympathies to Cliff’s wife, Julie, his six children, five grandchildren, and his many friends across the Rugby League family during this difficult time.”
A gofundme has since been set up in support of his family and can be found by clicking here.
