Hornets invite fans to Hive of activity this weekend

The RFL congratulate Rochdale Hornets ahead of the opening of their new Balderstone Park community facility this weekend.

The Betfred League One club and their Foundation have been working closely with the RFL and Rochdale Council, with the support of major sponsors Premier Kia and Russell Homes, on a new community hub which includes two full-size Rugby League pitches.

Supporters of the Hornets and other clubs are invited to Saturday’s opening, which kicks off at 9am and will feature a Learning Disability RL Festival also including teams from Halifax, Bradford and Sheffield, as well as a walking rugby match against Warrington Wolves, a Wheelchair RL taster session – and the captain’s run ahead of the big local derby against high-flying Oldham at Spotland on Sunday afternoon.

Marc Lovering, the RFL’s Director of Development, said:
“Congratulations to the Hornets and everyone who has contributed to the delivery of the new ‘Hive’ facility. We have been following progress over the past few months and I am sure Saturday’s opening will mark the start of a fantastic new era for the Club and the Hornets Foundation.

“Facilities such as this can make a huge impact not only on clubs but on wider communities. The Hive will not only provide a great base to deliver Rugby League activity but also benefit the wider community through a whole range of programmes and initiatives designed to support the local community.”

Andy Mazey, the Rochdale Hornets Chair, said:

“The Hive is a blueprint for our sport, and the end result is testament to the passion and dedication of everyone involved.

“This launch event will be a special day for the area, wider communities of the borough and our Rugby League family.

“It's heart-warming to see everyone's collective efforts to make such a positive impact, and this launch event is just the start of something very special, with some exciting times to come.

“This collaboration is also a shining example of what can be accomplished when a community comes together. The Hornets Foundation's ongoing commitment to promoting health, wellbeing and personal growth, in addition to its core sporting delivery, is expected to contribute to the wider community's development and prosperity.

“I want to extend my deepest thanks to Rochdale Borough Council, and every individual who contributed their skills and resources to make our vision a reality – including our sponsors Premier Kia and Russell Homes.

“The new community hub stands as a symbol of the power of collaboration and community spirit and will enrich the lives of our community for generations to come. Come along and be part of the launch, and get involved as it's inclusive, not exclusive.”

Balderstone Park is located at Platting Lane in Rochdale, with the postcode OL11 2HD.
