Warrington Wolves will take their long-running local rivalry with Wigan Warriors to Wembley for the first time since 1990 after beating Huddersfield Giants 46-10 in the second Betfred Challenge Cup Semi-Final in St Helens on Sunday.
Sam Burgess’s Wolves stormed to a 22-4 half-time lead, with England captain George Williams outstanding, and ended with eight tries – meaning their primrose and blue will face Wigan’s cherry and white at Wembley on Saturday June 8.
Wigan won the teams’ only previous Challenge Cup Final meeting 36-14, with two tries each for Kevin Iro and Mark Preston, and Andy Gregory taking the Lance Todd Trophy as man of the match.
The current Wigan Warriors team booked their first Wembley appearance for seven years with an equally impressive 38-6 win against Hull KR at Doncaster’s Eco-Power Stadium on Saturday.
The second Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup Final at Wembley will be a repeat of the first between Leeds Rhinos and St Helens, after the Rhinos withstood an inventive challenge from Wigan Warriors to secure a 34-20 win in the second Semi Final.
Saints, who have held the Challenge Cup since 2021 and were the first Women’s Wembley winners against the Rhinos last August, secured the chance to claim their fourth consecutive cup win by beating York Valkyrie 32-2 in Saturday’s first Semi-Final at the Eco-Power Stadium.
Sheffield Eagles and Wakefield Trinity will complete the action at Wembley on June 8, having secured their places in the AB Sundecks 1895 Cup Final – the cup competition for non-Super League clubs.
And the first of the season’s three Betfred Challenge Cup Finals will take place in Sheffield, at the English Institute of Sport, on Saturday June 1, when Catalans Dragons face Wigan Warriors in the Betfred Wheelchair Challenge Cup Final – after respective Semi Final wins against London Roosters and Leeds Rhinos on Saturday.
Finals Day at Wembley Stadium on Saturday 8 June is a triple-header featuring the finals of the Betfred Challenge Cup (Men’s and Women’s), alongside the AB Sundecks 1895 Cup Final.
