Schoolchildren in the South-east of England experienced Wheelchair Rugby League for the first time last month, in what became a very memorable day for a certain group of young people. Not only would they have the chance to learn about such a brilliant and inclusive sport, but also the positive impact of wheelchairs in people’s lives – an inspiring story to tell today on this significant and celebratory date in the calendar: International Wheelchair Day.
Organised by sporting charity The Sports Trust and Folkestone School Games, England Wheelchair Rugby League hosted an insightful taster day to secondary schools, hoping to educate and inspire a younger audience.
Children and young people from secondary schools across Folkestone and Ashford were able to try out Wheelchair Rugby League for the first time at the Three Hills Sports Centre, during an extremely enjoyable day during which they were able to participate in a range of Wheelchair Rugby League-related activities.
And they also met the king – England international and World Cup try-scorer and winner Lewis King that is! And who better to learn from than the inaugural winner of the Wheels of Steel Award at last year’s Rugby League’s Awards Night? An outstanding performer for Wheelchair Super League side London Roosters, Lewis helped to deliver the session alongside England Wheelchair Manager Martin Coyd, with youngsters taking the opportunity to chat and play alongside King themselves – a very special experience for all involved.
The Wheelchair Rugby League World Cup Trophy – won by England in 2022’s incredible final against France in Manchester – was also brought along for children to lift and have photos with, bringing smiles to everyone’s faces as a fun and unforgettable day drew to a close.
