England Women v Wales Preview

England Women v Wales Preview

England Women will kick-off an action-packed weekend of Rugby League as they host Wales at Headingley on Saturday.

The fixture is part of a double-header with England Men, who face Tonga at 2:30PM.

Saturday’s meeting will be the third time in as many years that England Women have faced Wales, with England reigning victorious in both meetings.

Two years ago, England faced Wales at the Halliwell Jones Stadium. England ran out dominant winners with a 60-0 success.

Last season, the two sides met during the mid-season in South Wales. England once again were the winners, however, by a smaller margin of 32-6. Fran Goldthorp scored a brace, meanwhile Hollie Dodd, Shona Hoyle, Amy Hardcastle and Tara Jones were all on the scoresheet.

The contest will be England’s first since the mid-season international victory over France. That was Stuart Barrow’s first game in charge and a 64-0 success set a strong tone.

Barrow has called upon many of England’s stalwarts. However, Anna Davies and Lacey Owen are both in contention to make their debuts.

Skipper, Jodie Cunningham is set to receive her 30th cap.

Wales come into the contest off the back of a 14-4 defeat to France last weekend. York Valkyrie’s Georgia Taylor scoring the only try on her debut.

The Welsh side will be captained by Bethan Dainton. Dainton is familiar to the Headingley turf as she has been a part of the Leeds Rhinos’ squad this season.

Dangerous full-back, Leanne Burnell is in contention to return. Burnell plays in the Betfred Women’s Super League South for Cardiff Demons and scored Wales’ only try when they faced England last season.

The game will be broadcast live on the BBC with kick-off at 12PM.
