Betfred Championship Preview | Round 17

Betfred Championship Preview | Round 17

Toulouse will get Round 17 underway as they will look for a fifth straight Betfred Championship win, as Widnes Vikings travel to France.

Toulouse are unbeaten at home this season and will be looking for that to continue. Their home victory over Bradford saw them move up to second in the table.

Olympique have won the last three meetings between the sides, including the 14-12 away win in Round Six.

After four consecutive defeats, Widnes parted company with head coach, John Kear.

The Vikings sit seventh with seven wins from their 16 matches in their bid for the play-offs.

Despite losing, Widnes came close to defeating Toulouse when they met earlier in the season.

Barrow Raiders suffered their first defeat in three games last weekend, as Halifax came from behind at the Shay.

Barrow raced into a 16-0 lead in as many minutes, but Halifax fought back and the sending off just before the break saw the Raiders with a tough ask.

Last season, Paul Crarey’s side sit 11th in the table and a victory against Batley would not be out of possibility from a side who have won three of their last five matches.

Batley Bulldogs saw their winning streak come to an end as they were defeated by London Broncos. The Bulldogs had won seven Championship matches in a row, before suffering a narrow loss to London.

Craig Lingard’s side won on both visits to Barrow last season, including their 18-8 play-off victory.

Batley have already beaten Barrow when the sides met in Round Six.

Bradford Bulls will host local rivals Keighley in a West Yorkshire derby.

This will be the third meeting this season, with both sides having one win each to their names.

Keighley comfortably defeated Bradford at Cougar Park in Round Seven, however, the Bulls got their revenge with a 42-18 success at Summer Bash.

Both sides could have a player reach 100 career appearances. Brad England for Bradford and Sadiq Adebiyi both have played 99 career appearances and are in contention to make their 100th when the sides meet on Sunday.

London Broncos will take on Newcastle Thunder at Ebbsfleet’s Kuflink Stadium.

The Broncos produced an impressive win in Ebbsfleet last season, as they came from behind to defeat Sheffield Eagles.

Last weekend saw London bounce back from consecutive defeats with an impressive away win at Batley.

Danger player, Iliess Macani could make his 200th career appearance. Macani has made 112 appearances for the capital side.

Newcastle Thunder sit bottom of the table, however, they have produced some strong performances recently.

Thunder defeated Keighley 18-16 in Round 15 and will be hoping to build on that success.

Chris Thorman’s side did defeat London last season away from home and they will be looking to do the same on Sunday.

Swinton Lions defeated Widnes last weekend in a massive win for the club and they will be looking for the same when they face Sheffield Eagles.

Despite being relegated in 2021, Swinton did defeat the Eagles.

Dan Abram could make his 150th career appearance. Abram has made 37 appearances for the club since joining in 2022.

Mark Aston’s side bounced back from their defeat to Toulouse with a strong 40-0 win at home to Newcastle.

Sheffield currently sit third and trail Toulouse on goal difference.

Anthony Thackeray has been a tough competitor and a big threat in the Sheffield side. Thackeray has scored 62 tries for the Eagles and 248 in his career.

Whitehaven have a short turn around as they will face Featherstone.

Haven faced York on Wednesday evening and held on in a close contest.

The midweek victory saw Whitehaven move up to ninth in the table, but it will be a tough ask with the league leaders making the trip to Cumbria.

Featherstone have won their previous eight visits to Whitehaven and they will be looking for that to continue.

Rovers asserted their dominance earlier in the campaign with a 76-4 win against their opponents on Sunday.

Sean Long’s side have an eight-point advantage at the top of the Betfred Championship.

Andrew Henderson will be hoping that his side can end their five game losing run in the Championship when they face Halifax.

The Knights took an early lead in their midweek fixture; however, they were unable to fightback after Haven took control.

York defeated Halifax last season during the play-offs despite losing both regular round fixtures.

Halifax fought from behind to defeat Barrow last weekend.

Prolific try scorer, Lachlan Wakmsley scored four tries for the third time this season. Walmsley has scored 28 tries this season and has an impressive record against York. Since joining Halifax, Walmsley has scored 10 tries in just four appearances.

Panthers pair Adam O’Brien and Jacob Fairbank could both make their 250th career appearances. Fairbank has made 209 for the club, meanwhile O’Brien has mainly featured for Bradford Bulls and Huddersfield Giants in his career.

Simon Grix’s side are fifth in the table.
