Rochdale Mayfield looking forward to historic Challenge Cup tie against Newcastle

Rochdale Mayfield have enjoyed some memorable moments throughout their 65-year history, but this weekend will provide the biggest yet.
For the first time ever, Mayfield have defied the odds to reach the Fourth Round of the Betfred Challenge Cup and secure a home tie against Championship outfit Newcastle Thunder, in what is set to be a thrilling cup tie at Mayfield Sports Centre.
The National Conference League Premier Division outfit earned memorable victories at League One Cornwall and fellow NCL side Leigh Miners Rangers to reach this stage of the competition.
Although the visitors have endured a mixed start in the league this season, Mayfield coaches Sam Butterworth and Steve Wood are under no illusion to how difficult Saturday’s game will be for their side.
Butterworth told Rochdale Online: "Despite their league showing make no mistake Newcastle are a good side – a very good side.
"They may not be getting the results but look at the level they play at. They should be fitter than us and have more experience at playing at this level of intensity, but we are not worried. We are going into this game as with any other; we want to win.”
Although two divisions separate the sides, Butterworth has revealed that his troops will not be heading into the game with a defensive mindset.
He explained: "We won't be playing defensive rugby. We will attack at every opportunity and who knows what will happen, if we get a lucky break or two, or a couple of decisions go our way we could rattle the Thunder.
"For most of our lads this will be the biggest game of their careers and there may be some nerves but to counter that we have Sean Penkywicz in the middle of the park. He has shown already what a big influence he can have on a game, and we will be looking for that this weekend.
"Whatever the result we will be celebrating after the game, either the win or the fact that we have achieved this milestone."
Rochdale Mayfield take on Newcastle Thunder in Round 4 of the Betfred Challenge Cup on Saturday 1 April. Kick-off is at 13:00 at Mayfield Sports Centre.
