England’s World Cup win to inspire next generation at Yorkshire Wheelchair Sports Festival

England’s World Cup win to inspire next generation at Yorkshire Wheelchair Sports Festival

The legacy of England Wheelchair’s historic Rugby League World Cup win will be honoured at a pioneering sports festival later this month, thanks to a new partnership between the Sheffield Eagles Foundation and Wheelpower.

Taking place at the city’s Concord Sports Centre on Wednesday 25th January, this year’s Yorkshire Wheelchair Sports Festival will enable all children above the age of five with a physical disability to take part in a variety of different sports, including Wheelchair rugby league.

Following England Wheelchair’s inspiring performance at RLWC2021, which included an impressive semi-final victory over Wales at Sheffield’s English Institute of Sport, Wheelchair Rugby League’s popularity is booming, and the Eagles Foundation have now swooped in to introduce the sport to the next generation.

The festival will round off a memorable few months for Rugby League in Sheffield, which has also seen Shaun Wane’s England Men side earn a record 94-4 win over Greece in front of 18,780 fans at Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane.

Commenting on the upcoming festival, Eagles Foundation Chair David Butler, said: “It’s great that we’re going to be at Concord Sports Centre for the Yorkshire Wheelchair Sports Festival,”

“The key to success and growth is to strike while the iron’s hot.

"Wheelchair rugby league has never been in such a strong position previously and we want to open the game up to everyone in Sheffield.

“As always, inclusivity is at the heart of the sport and that is the case for the festival where those who are aged five and over, and with a physical disability, can take part.”
