Betfred Super League Round-Up

Betfred Super League Round-Up

Leeds Rhinos will face Castleford Tigers in a winner-takes-all clash for a place in the post-season play-offs after both sides suffered heavy defeats in the penultimate round of Betfred Super League fixtures.

The Rhinos missed their chance to seal a top-six spot after going down 32-18 to Catalans Dragons in France, hours after Castleford were brushed aside 50-10 at home to Salford Red Devils.

Their respective wins confirmed a play-off place for both the Dragons and all-but-mathematically the Red Devils, with the winners of Saturday's Yorkshire derby at Headingley now destined to join them.

Two first-half tries from Fouad Yaha - his second marking his 100th in Super League - helped Catalans into a 28-6 half-time advantage, with Sam Walters having briefly levelled for Leeds before Joe Chan and the returning Mitchell Pearce put Catalans in control.

Gil Dudson rounded off the first period by crossing for Catalans and although the Rhinos fought back after the break with tries from Richie Myler and Brad Dwyer, Samisoni Langi averted a nervy finish by completing the scoring four minutes from time.

First-half tries from Marc Sneyd, Ken Sio and Jack Ormondroyd set the tone at The Jungle where Salford were fast out of the blocks and would ultimately soar to an eight-try victory.

The Tigers roared back with tries from Jake Mamo and Derrell Olpherts to cut their opponents' lead in half, only to face another onslaught at the start the second period.

Shane Wright, Deon Cross and Brodie Croft all crossed in a 20-minute period before Kallum Watkins and Sneyd added two more to crush the Tigers, who failed to add to their first-half tally.

St Helens confirmed receipt of the Leaders' Shield for the first time in three years despite slipping to their first home defeat of the season 34-18 to Wakefield Trinity.

Winger Lewis Murphy scored four tries for the visitors, who overpowered an inexperienced Saints line-up featuring four debutants - but it proved irrelevant as Saints' closest rivals Wigan fell to defeat at Hull KR.

Young centre Ben Davies scored two of St Helens' tries with Jon Bennison also touching down, while winger Tommy Makinson kicked three conversions from as many attempts.

Wigan lost 38-28 at Rovers, who scored seven tries to the Warriors' five to go level with their eighth-placed rivals Hull FC ahead of the final game of the regular season next weekend at the MKM Stadium.

Ethan Ryan claimed two tries for the hosts and Rowan Milnes kicked five conversions, while Wigan crossed through Oliver Partington, Ben O'Keefe, Jack Bibby, Sam Halsall and Abbas Miski and O'Keefe also kicked four goals.

Matt Dufty scored four tries but Warrington's comeback fell short as they lost 38-36 at play-off bound Huddersfield Giants.

The result ensured Huddersfield of a top-four finish and means Warrington Wolves will finish in their lowest top-flight position, with only relegated Toulouse below them.

The hosts scored six of their seven tries in a 24-minute first-half spell and saw a 24-point lead reduced to a final winning margin of two by Wolves' brave recovery in the second period.

On Saturday, Hull FC snapped a four-game losing streak as they scored seven tries beat an inexperienced Toulouse side 38-12.
