Last weekend (August 13) saw the newly formed Preston and South Ribble Rabbitohs U13’s take to the pitch for the first time, as they took part in a development game hosted by Accrington Wildcats U13’s.
It was the first step forward in a plan that will support the continued growth of Rugby League in Lancashire, on the back of the huge efforts made by development officers from Preston North End Community Trust and Wigan Warriors Community Foundation.
A proper match setting was established to allow both teams to focus on their development, with it being played 9-a-side to allow more opportunities in both attack and defence.
The game was played in great spirits in scorching heat, with Accrington Wildcats coaches in particular going above and beyond to help all players from both teams.
There was some great Rugby League on display, too – dazzling footwork and thundering tackles made it a great watch, and given it was the Rabbitohs’ first ever game, they did themselves and all those watching on proud.
Ryan Allen, Rabbitohs Head Coach, said: “The whole day was a huge success from start to finish. We couldn’t think of a better way to begin our journey than by linking up with a fellow Lancashire team in Accrington Wildcats, and together we can hope to inspire more people to play Rugby League in the future as the World Cup gets closer.â€
With RLWC2021 set for October, opportunities like this aim to leave a lasting legacy from Rugby League in Lancashire, encouraging more children and adults playing and following the sport.
Accrington Wildcats Head Coach Mark Brindle also reflected on a greatly promising day: “It was great to see so many new Under 13 players from the Preston area representing their hometown.
“There are some hugely positive signs in Lancashire along the M65 Corridor for the development of Rugby League, and this coming together between Accrington Wildcats and Preston & South Ribble Rabbitohs has contributed further to that.
“For their first ever run out as team, they did themselves and their coaches very proud.â€
