Warrington awarded wildcard spot for Women's Nines Finals Day

Warrington awarded wildcard spot for Women's Nines Finals Day

Warrington Wolves have been awarded the wildcard berth in the Women’s Nines Finals Day, which will be held at Salford's AJ Bell Stadium on Sunday, July 24.

They join St Helens, Huddersfield Giants, York City Knights, Catalans Dragons and Leeds Rhinos, who won their groups at the pool stages which took place at Victoria Park in Warrington on May 1.

Warrington and Saints played the only draw at Victoria Park, with St Helens progressing on points difference. Warrington missed out on automatic qualification despite finishing the day undefeated.

Betfred Women's Super League General Manager Thomas Brindle said: "Going into the tournament we had a process in place which would determine the sixth wildcard spot, which in the first instance, was the highest placed non-qualifying team

"In this instance, Warrington was the standalone highest placed non-qualifying team with five points, compared to four points across the other groups."

The news is another fillip for Women's Rugby League in the UK, which received another place in the spotlight last night when the dramatic Super League fixture between St Helens and Leeds was shown live on Sky Sports.

Nines Rugby League, meanwhile, is played all year round, across the world. This weekend, Rugby League in the north-east of the United States will reboot for 2022 with a tournament in Wilmington, Delaware.

Tickets for the Women's Nines Finals Day at the AJ Bell Stadium go on sale on Monday, with further information such as the pools, fixtures and more set to be revealed over the coming days.
