Dewsbury progress in Coral Challenge Cup

The Rams will face Newcastle Thunder on BBC Sport website on Sunday

Dewsbury Rams booked their place in Round Five of the Coral Challenge Cup with a hard-fought 16-22 win in Cumbria against fellow Championship side Whitehaven.

The victory means Lee Greenwood’s Rams will face Newcastle Thunder in Round Five on Sunday afternoon, live on the BBC Sport website.

It was Whitehaven who opened the scoring as Sam Forrester broke away from the Dewsbury defence and finished under the posts. Jake Moore converted.

Dom Speakman would score twice in 11 minutes – both from close-range – to put the Rams ahead. However, the sides would go into the interval level thanks to Andrew Bulman’s late first half try.

Liam Finn successfully kicked two conversions in the first half and added a penalty goal two minutes after the break to edge Dewsbury back in front.

The back-and-forth nature of the game continued five minutes later as Jason Mossop went over in the left-hand corner. Connor Holliday’s unsuccessful conversion meant Whitehaven led by two until another Finn penalty goal drew the sides level once more.

But, it was Dewsbury who ensured they would feature in Round Five as Connor Scott smashed his way through the hosts defence with just eight minutes remaining.
