Dewsbury edge Halifax in heated Tuesday affair

The Rams move up to 8th in Betfred Championship

Dewsbury Rams edged out Halifax – 16-18 - in a heated Tuesday night affair in the Betfred Championship, climbing to 8th in the process.

A cagey first 20 minutes saw the Rams take two early shots at goal to establish a 0-4 lead.

Halifax would be handed two sin-bins inside five minutes as Kevin Larroyer was sent to the bin for interference at the play-the-ball before Ed Barber suffered the same fare for kicking out. Paul Sykes added a third penalty goal between the two yellow cards to further Dewsbury’s lead.

The visitors would go into the break with a six-point lead but not before Halifax’s Scott Grix and Dewsbury’s Dominic Speakman were sent from the field for their parts in an altercation.

There was more try-scoring action after the interval with Scott Murrell jinking over the line before Jodie Broughton also crossed. Ed Woodburn-Hall successfully converted on both occasions.

Dual-registration signing Matty Gee powered his way over for the Rams to level the scores but Halifax regained the lead shortly after when Broughton doubled his account for the evening.

With 15 minutes remaining, Andrew Gabriel latched onto a clever kick from Joe Martin to level the scores once more. Sykes was in imperious form with the boot and his conversion proved to be the difference between the sides.

Dewsbury now prepare for a trip to Whitehaven on Sunday in the Coral Challenge Cup while Halifax travel to Sheffield Eagles on Saturday.
