Whitehaven crowned Betfred League 1 champions

Whitehaven secured their place in the Betfred Championship next season after lifting the League 1 title, following a comprehensive 72-0 thrashing of Coventry Bears.

The Cumbrian side, who needed to avoid defeat to clinch the title, did so in style, crossing 13 times in the Rugby sunshine to send their strong travelling following home delighted.

Jordan Burns was the pick of the bunch, notching four scores on his way to the player of the match award, and he was delighted his team could get the job done without any hiccups:

'Before the game, everyone was so nervous. I don't think anyone expected this at the start of the year, I think we were predicted to finish 7th. We all believe in ourselves and our ability, and we just wanted to go out there and see it off and win the league and that's what we've done'.

'We've put in a quality performance, we battered them in defence and we knew that's all we had to do'.

Coach Gary Charlton echoed those sentiments:

'I thought we played really well. We earned the right to play and we produced some good rugby. Great credit to the lads, thety've been great all year and this has just topped it off.

'They're tight knit, the stay close together. Defensively all year we've been pretty sound and we wanted to finish off in style, and they've done that so they can go and enjoy themselves now'.

The second promotion place in Betfred League 1 will be decided via the play-offs, with the official schedule to be determined following Sunday afternoon's fixtures.
