Daryl Clark became only the third hooker to win the Lance Todd Trophy – and the second from Warrington - with his significant contribution to the Wolves’ 2019 Wembley triumph.
The 26-year-old Yorkshireman followed in the footsteps of Michael Monaghan, who won Rugby League’s best-known player of the match award for his performance against Huddersfield in 2009.
It had been 60 years earlier that the Hull FC legend Tommy Harris became the first hooker to win the 73-year-old award, even in defeat by Wakefield Trinity.
For the first time this year, the RFL is publishing voting details on behalf of the Rugby League Writers and Broadcasters Association – whose members are given the responsibility of conducting the voting by the Red Devils’ Association on behalf of the Salford club.
As usual, the votes were collected and collated in a press box poll in the last 10 minutes of the match, allowing the result to be announced to the Wembley crowd and BBC television viewers.
There was a slight change this year, with a number of votes registered by text message from the journalists invited to the Cup Final Reunion in Club Wembley, and Dave Woods of the BBC texting in his vote from the commentary box on the other side of the stadium.
Clark was a comfortable winner with 21 of the 34 votes registered.
Stefan Ratchford received 7 votes; there were 3 for Ben Murdoch-Masila; and one each for Bryson Goodwin, Joe Philbin and Jack Hughes.
