Widnes record biggest-ever victory

Widnes record biggest-ever victory

Widnes Vikings 90-0 Coventry Bears

Widnes Vikings rewrote the record books as they defeated Coventry Bears 90-0 in the fifth round of the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup to record their biggest-ever victory.
Denis Betts' Betfred Super League side never broke sweat in this tie and they despatched the part-timers with ease.

The Vikings were in control from the first minute to the last, running in 17 tries.
Widnes' previous record win came in 2009 against similar opposition in the shape of Saddleworth Rangers, who were handed an 88-0 defeat and here, the hosts were 54-0 up by the break.

The Vikings' win at the Halton Stadium was even more clinical with Danny Craven crossing over for four tries and Rhys Hanbury and Patrick Ah Van touching down for trebles.
Brad Walker scored a brace as Lloyd White, Matt Whitley, Ed Chamberlain, Jay Chapelhow and Ryan Ince added one apiece against the League 1 side as Tom Gilmore added the extras.

Betts said: "We had to be ruthless today and do the little things really well and if you do that I know we can score points. To score 90 is a testament to what we can do.

"I just wanted the players to enjoy having the ball in hand. It’s always hard in these games as you are on a hiding to nothing as you are expected to win by big scores."

Coventry boss Tom Tsang said: "Widnes were quality. The guys knew it was going to be tough and Widnes were going to be fast and that’s what we got. The first 10 minutes came as a shock to the system and it was a really tough ask for our boys with Super League standard players running at them.

"It was our day in the sun today. We’d won two games to get to the fifth round and we deserve to be here. It’s a great experience for the boys and for me as a coach and we’ll take what we can from it."
