National Conference League Round Nine Round-Up

National Conference League Round Nine Round-Up

Week nine of the National Conference League produced more outstanding action.

In the Premier Division, Hunslet Club Parkside fought back from 10-0 down against Wath Brow Hornets to win, while Rochdale Mayfield edged Siddal courtesy of the boot of half-back Cole Conolly. Lock Lane bounced back to winning ways with a high scoring success at Egremont while York Acorn celebrated their first win of the season with a couple of long range tries in a 30-6 triumph over Leigh Miners Rangers. Leaders West Hull withstood the challenge of Pilkington Recs and Thornhill were just edged at home by Thatto Heath Crusaders.

Fast-improving Featherstone Lions again had one of the standout results in Division One when they beat West Bowling 28-24 and the title credentials of Hull Dockers continue to grow after a 19-12 home success against Kells. There was a powerful 34-14 success for Oulton at Myton and two tries from Jay Taylor helped Saddleworth Rangers to a comfortable 38-16 defeat of Milford. Ince Rose Bridge led a sparkling second half comeback at Stanningley only for the hosts to edge through 26-18.

Clock Face met Wigan St Judes on Friday night with a home win secured from the hosts, but more about that game in a bit!Prop forward Pete Mitchell was the toast of Bradford Dudley Hill with four tries in their 45-22 success against Dewsbury Celtic. Unfortunately, the tie between leaders Crosfields and Beverley was postponed and will be played at a later date. Big wins from Barrow Island (at Dewsbury Celtic) Heworth (at home to Hunslet Warriors)  and Normanton Knights (over visitors Woolston Rovers) completed the results in this section. Here's more about that derby between Clock Face and Wigan St Judes.

Clock Face Miners 26 Wigan St Judes 6

With the Betfred Challenge Cup Semi-Final dominating the thoughts of the sporting public of St Helens and Wigan, this game was switched to a Friday night kick off and played throughout in wet conditions.

Clock Face enjoyed a lightning start and were 12-0 up inside the first seven minutes thanks to Luke Forber, leaping high for a kick, and alert play from Jordy Cresser that saw him touch down under the posts.

As the first half went on Wigan St Judes began to enjoy some good field position but excellent defence kept them at bay. Judes substitute Tom Hillyer was sinbinned just before half-time for a swinging arm.

Early in the second half Clock took advantage. Brandon Lewis getting over in the 48th minute, while Luke Leyden made it 20-0 with a try after 56 minutes.

As in the first half  St Judes came back into the contest and claimed a long range try by Luke Melling, Danny Cassidy tagging on the extras and they went close on three occasions to getting that second try but again the home defence held out and a late spell of pressure saw them claim their fifth and final score when Ryan O'Donnell crossed and Highcock added his third goal with the final kick of the match.

Division Three brought two runaway wins for East Leeds (a club record 96-0 success over Hensingham) and Waterhead Warriors (76-6 against Eastmoor Dragons). Shaw Cross Sharks continue their play-off surge with a 22-10 defeat of Oldham St Annes while Millom had the boot and play of young half-back Jack Newbegin to thank as they held off Seaton Rangers. Bentley got the better of Drighlington in a high scoring 28-36 success while a drop goal from Dan Winner proved to be the difference for Batley Boys as they defeated Leigh East 17-16.
