National Conference League Round 5 Round-Up

National Conference League Round 5 Round-Up

The fifth round of this year's NCL competition was another packed full of incident.

West Hull dominated on the road at Egremont, winning 52-0 in the Premier Division while there were narrow wins for Hunslet Club Parkside and Thatto Heath too.

Stanningley have emerged as new front runners in Division One after downing Featherstone Lions while Wigan St Pats again found their scoring groove at Milford.

Close games were the order of the day in Division Two with eight points or less the winning margins in five of the six games while Waterhead Warriors bounced back from their heavy defeat at East Leeds last time out to beat Shaw Cross Sharks on the road and Oldham St Annes claimed the scalp of Seaton Rangers.

Premier Division

Siddal 24 Wath Brow Hornets 16

On balance, Siddal deserved victory in this Premier Division clash between two of the big guns, however there is much to admire about the never-say-die-attitude of Wath Brow Hornets.

The hosts built an 18-0 advantage on the hour, only to see a valiant fightback fall short from the visitors.

Henry Turner opened scoring for Siddal with a try after seven minutes and he was followed, five minutes later by Alex Chatterton, an effort goaled by Jamie Greenwood.

Cole Walker Taylor was sinbinned for a professional foul for the visitors a minute after that score and there was some controversy when he was dismissed altogether for trying to re-enter the field of play seven minutes later.

Turner went over for his second try on the half-hour mark and Siddal led 14-0 at the break.

The game looked all but done on the hour when Ben West scored for Siddal but a remarkable fightback from Watch Brow rocked the home side to their foundations.

It all started after 64 minutes when Aidan Dawson found a way through the defence before quickfire tries in the next nine minutes from Ellison Holgate and Peter Caddy, plus two conversions from Sam Curwen, closed the deficit to two points.

Then with time ticking down, Greenwood sealed victory with a late try to help Siddal claim the two points.

Division One

Hull Dockers 30 West Bowling 10

Hull Dockers were excellent at home as they won their third game of the season in convincing fashion.

Most of the damage was done in a superb first half where the hosts marched out to a 24-0 lead.

Josh Brannigan opened the score after seven minutes with Dan Suddaby landing the first of five goals. Suddaby was an influential figure throughout, eventually getting 18 points of his own.

There was little between the teams for the next twenty minutes but eventually Dockers cut loose. Peter Holmes scored their second try and the Suddaby double in the five minutes preceeding half-time had the hosts flying.

Lewis Taylor pulled West Bowling back into the contest after 53 minutes with a Harry Williams improved effort and Jack Milburn gave the visitors further hope with their second try nine minutes later, but there was to be no further comeback when Chris Lythe scored Dockers fifth and final try on 68 minutes.

In the last minute Bowling's Kyle Moore was sinbinned for disputing decisions with the match referee and Dockers went on to celebrate.

Division Two

Heworth 30 Crosfields 8

A brilliant first half from Heworth all but sealed Crosfield's fate in this top-of-the-table Division Two clash at Elmpark Way.

The hosts roared out of the blocks with James Morland scoring in the tenth minute. George Elliott kicked the first of his three goals but Crosfields responded through Brad Stanway.

The next fifteen minutes belonged to Heworth as they took control. Adam Dent (twice), Elliott and Tyler Craig all went over before the half-hour to open a 26-4 advantage. Elliott's try in particular knocked the visitors confidence, establishing an unassailable advantage.

Crosfields tried hard to get back in the contest and were rewarded after 34 minutes when Jack Lewis claimed their second try, but Heworth were not going to let this one go, controlling the second half and keeping their visitors at bay. Fittingly, the hosts scored the final try of the game after 65 minutes through Liam Richmond to seal a valuable win.

Division Three

Leigh East 12 East Leeds 34

East Leeds remain unbeaten in Division Three thanks to a hard fought 34-12 win at Leigh East.

The league leaders had to contend with a number of injuries that reduced their options and a Leigh side that wanted to play flowing rugby.

East Leeds started scoring four minutes in when Nathan Conroy supported the outstanding Ben Walkin and ran to the posts, also kicking the conversion.

Ben Wharton went around the outside of his man and looked set to respond for Leigh East before being hauled into touch. East Leeds responded when Kane Riley chipped over and James Duckworth flew to the posts. Tommy Milburn took over kicking and it was 12-0.

Leigh East refused to buckle with Wharton going on another long run and Kieron Prescott pulled back after a forward pass, but it was the visitors who scored again 12 minutes from half-time when a dropped ball at a scrum led to Andy Djuekessi going 90 metres to make it 0-16 at half-time.

Duckworth got his second try before Leigh East rallied and Wharton seared over. Jay Boyd goaled but two more tries from East Leeds Moris Kamano and Lucas Riley, both goaled by Milburn stretched the lead to 6-34.

There was final consolation for Leigh East when some good passing unlocked the defence and Prescott cantered through the middle to score for Boyd to goal.
