Betfred Challenge Cup Round 6 Round-Up

Betfred Challenge Cup Round 6 Round-Up

Wakefield Trinity heaped more woe on Warrington Wolves as they stormed into the Betfred Challenge Cup quarter-finals with a 16-12 win at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Eight days after their 38-22 Super League success at the same ground, Trinity fought back from an early 12-0 deficit to hand Daryl Powell's beleaguered Wolves their fourth straight defeat.

Mason Lino once again ran the show for Wakefield, kicking two goals as Trinity ran in tries from Lewis Murphy, Reece Lyne and Corey Hall, while the hosts responded through Connor Wrench and Josh Thewlis.

Wakefield will host Wigan in the quarter-finals after the Warriors eased to a 20-0 win over Salford Red Devils.

Two tries in the space of three first-half minutes from Liam Byrne and Liam Marshall, along with two conversions and a penalty from Zak Hardaker, put the hosts in full control.

Salford missed a number of chances to make a impression on the scoreboard before a fine try from John Bateman ended their resistance.

Leeds Rhinos' nightmare start to the season continued as they were thumped 40-16 at home by Castleford.

The Tigers raced out to a 28-0 first-half lead, crossing for five tries in the opening 40 minutes, and adding two more in the second before Leeds, in their first game since the departure of head coach Richard Agar, fought back with three scores.

Gareth O’Brien grabbed a try and kicked six goals, to finish with a 16-point haul, while winger Greg Eden finished with a brace.

Cas will travel to Hull KR, who were made to fight to the final hooter to see off Championship side Leigh Centurions 24-18.

Leigh led through Ben Reynolds' penalty but tries by Frankie Halton, Mikey Lewis and Matt Parcell, plus a fourth from Matty Storton after the break, gave the Robins a commanding 24-2 advantage.

Keanan Brand, Jacob Jones and Joe Mellor all went over in a sterling comeback from Leigh who ultimately just came up short.

Huddersfield Giants were also pushed to the limit at Championship Barrow, with a last-minute try from centre Innes Senior putting the gloss on a 30-16 win that had looked far from certain.

Tee Ritson and Jarrad Stack scored spectacular tries for the hosts and Huddersfield could not shake them off until the death despite crossing four times through Luke Yates, Ricky Leutele, Sebastine Ikahihifo and Jack Ashworth, with Oliver Russell kicking four conversions.

Huddersfield's reward is a home tie against five-times winners Hull FC, who ran in 11 tries in a 58-12 win at Championship side Sheffield Eagles.

Connor Wyne went over for a hat-trick and the brilliant Jake Connor scored a brace while Adam Swift, Andre Savelio, Josh Griffin, Carlos Tuimavave, Mitieli Vulikijapani and Jordan Lane all scored for Hull.

Sheffield, who stunned Wigan to win the trophy in 1998, managed to breach the Black and Whites’ line twice through Kris Welham and Tom Holmes.

St Helens rebounded from a shock Super League defeat to rock-bottom Toulouse with a 46-4 win over Championship Whitehaven at the LEL Arena.

Tommy Makinson converted seven of his eight attempts at goal and former Whitehaven player Kyle Amor crossed as Saints eventually made their superior fitness tell.

Saints will travel to last season's Grand Final opponents Catalans Dragons, who survived a greater scare, coming from behind to see off Featherstone Rovers 27-14 in France.

Tries in the last 20 minutes from Tyrone May and Tom Davies spared the Dragons' blushes against their plucky opponents, for whom Joseph Leilua went over twice.
