Report: Wigan Warriors 20-0 Salford Red Devils

Wigan Warriors became the first club to reach the Betfred Challenge Cup Quarter-Finals with a hard-earned 20-0 win over Salford Red Devils at the DW Stadium on Friday night.

In front of the Premier Sports cameras, Wigan took charge in the early stages, breaking the deadlock after 11 minutes through a Liam Byrne try.

Zak Hardaker goaled for a 6-0 lead and the home side soon doubled their advantage.

Liam Marshall would go in next, touching down on 15 minutes with Hardaker once again adding the goal for a 12-0 lead.

Despite much endeavour, Salford couldn't break down a firm Wigan defence and the hosts added to their lead on 25 minutes with a Hardaker penalty - and 14-0 is how it stayed at half time.

After Kai Pearce-Paul succumbed to injury, John Bateman moved to the right centre position and excelled in the second half, scoring what proved to be the only try of the second period.

It came on 51 minutes as he finished a flowing team move that involved six players and started in their own half.

Hardaker goaled for a 20-0 lead and Wigan never looked likely to lose that advantage as they shut Salford out for the rest of the second period.

Matt Peet's side will now watch the weekend unfold to see which seven clubs join them in the next round, with the draw taking place at half time of Leeds' clash with Castleford at Headingley on Saturday afternoon.
