Halifax Panthers, one of the established heavyweights of Wheelchair Rugby League, face a tough double test when the Betfred Wheelchair Super League resumes this weekend.
The Panthers play reigning champions Leeds Rhinos on Saturday, and back that up the following day by taking on Wigan Warriors - who have made such a promising start to their debut season in the competition, with consecutive wins against Warrington Wolves and London Roosters.
Leeds got off to a flyer in their title defence with a dominant 70-20 victory against North Wales Crusaders in their opening game of the season - and welcomed two stars of the Rhinos Betfred Super League squad, Sam Walters and David Fusitu’ua, to join them in training this week.
London Roosters won the only game last weekend, battling past Warrington 54-37 in a competitive fixture.
England pair Joe Coyd with five tries and Lewis King with four led the way. Dan Edwards, Ash Archer and Jason Owen - who also landed three goals – were their other try scorers.
Roosters led 30-14 at the break after making a flying start, head coach Tom Coyd noting: "It was pleasing to see our team - who are still learning to come together - fight off a resolute Wolves side. The players are continuing to gel together and have some very clear objectives to take back into training."
Lenny Izzard again impressed for the Wolves who were better rewarded this week for some improved six tackle plays. "We feel we are learning each week what it takes to compete at Super League level," said Amy Griffiths.
"Despite our inexperience and their pace and movement, the teams were evenly matched for the most part."
The growing depth of Wheelchair Rugby League will also be in evidence this weekend as Sheffield Eagles will host Rochdale Hornets in the Championship North.
