Betfred Championship Preview | Round 6

Betfred Championship Preview | Round 6

The Betfred Championship returns with a huge day of action on Sunday as six fixtures take place, followed by the latest installment of Monday Night Rugby League on Premier Sports.

Arguably the pick of Sunday's games sees York City Knights host Widnes Vikings from 3pm, a fixture that will be shown live on Our League.

Hosts York are fifth in the early Betfred Championship table and have caught the eye with their expansive play this year. James Ford's men firmly have a play-off spot in their sights and Widnes at home could be a good test of their credentials.

In opposition, Widnes enjoyed a superb start to the season but came unstuck at home to an impressive Barrow side last time out. Simon Finningan's side still sit third in the table thanks to their four league wins so far.

Elsewhere, Barrow Raiders, one of the two still unbeaten sides so far this year, take their impressive record into a home game with London Broncos.

The Raiders have a home Cup tie with Huddersfield Giants to look forward to later this month, but full focus will be on their league form for now as they look to keep pace with Featherstone at the top of the ladder.

The Broncos are still yet to win this year after an off-season which saw a transition from full time to part time, but their best performance to date came last time out as they lost just 26-24 at home to York. Could this be the week they get off the mark?

Batley Bulldogs are at home to Featherstone Rovers in a repeat of their entertaining Challenge Cup tie from last week.

Rovers produced the goods last weekend, winning 54-20 in a game which saw 13 tries scored but will know they have a task on their hands to make it six wins from six and keep their place at the top of the Betfred Championship table.

Bradford Bulls face a trip to Workington Town on Sunday with both sides looking to kickstart their respective seasons.

Bradford are ninth in the current standings after two wins from their four fixtures so far and showed up well against Leigh, losing late on in the Cup, last time out despite illness hitting the squad hard.

Meanwhile Workington are bottom of the table with no wins from four, but will take heart from their own Cup performance against high-flying Barrow last weekend.

Newcastle Thunder make the journey down to Dewsbury Rams this weekend as they look to keep their play-off push on track.

Thunder were beaten 34-18 by Leigh in their last outing two weeks ago, leaving them eighth in the table after two wins from five.

Meanwhile second-bottom Dewsbury's only win to date was a 12-10 triumph over Sheffield at home a month ago - they will be keen to claim their second of the year which could help them climb the table and ease fears of facing the drop.

In Monday Night Rugby League this week, Halifax Panthers host Leigh Centurions at The Shay, 7.45pm kick off on Premier Sports.

Fax have endured a difficult start to their 2022 campaign. They sit 11th having won just once all season despite a raft of eye-catching recruits in the off-season, but their first TV game could just bring out the best in Simon Grix's side.

By contrast, Leigh sit second in the table and only came unstuck against Featherstone in difficult conditions last month. They will be hoping to keep the heat on Rovers with another win this week.
