A Community Rugby League player has been suspended until 1 June 2022 after admitting placing bets on numerous matches, including some involving his own side.
The RFL, acting on information received from SkyBet, found Gareth Blackburn of Siddal ARLFC to have breached RFL Operational Rules by betting on National Conference League and Challenge Cup matches.
The RFL has a responsibility to ensure the integrity of its competitions, and all Rugby League players are subject to the Code of Conduct on Betting and Related Activity, known as the ‘Betting Code’. Blackburn, who complied fully with the investigation, accepted the charge but said he was not aware of the code.
Blackburn did not win any of the bets placed and the suspension reflects a number of mitigating factors set out in the player’s submissions.
There is no financial sanction and Blackburn will be able to continue to train with the club.
The RFL offers education to all players around the risks and dangers of gambling, and support through RL Cares.
