The Girls’ Rugby League season will draw to a close this weekend with an U14 and U16 Premier Division Grand Final double-header at Victoria Park in Warrington.
Following a record-breaking attendance for the Betfred Women’s Super League Grand Final, Dewsbury Moor, Ashton Bears, Thatto Heath Crusaders and Oulton Raidettes will compete as the Girls’ game celebrates over 2000 participants being registered this season, an increase of 450 from 2019, despite the Covid-19 pandemic.
Dewsbury Moor – Community Club of England and Leeds Rhinos Women’s star Caitlin Beevers – will face Ashton Bears in the Under-14s Final at 11am.
This will be followed Thatto Heath Crusaders – former home of several of the St Helens Women’s side that completed an historic treble this past weekend – going up against Oulton Raidettes in the Under-16s Final at 12:30pm.
Oulton Raidettes enjoyed success this past weekend at Under-14s as they defeated Ashton Bears 24-18 in the inaugural Girls War of the Roses Final at Castleford Tigers’ Mend-A-Hose Jungle. The Girls War of the Roses Finals saw both the Yorkshire and North-West Cup winners go head-to-head.
The Grand Final went down to the last play of the game with fullbacks from both sides stealing the show – Ashton’s Izzy Rose scored twice and added three conversions while Ebony Stead – of Oulton – scored an impressive hat-trick. Ashton centre Amelia Burton and Raidettes duo Frankie Blakey and Amee Barnham were also on the scoresheet.
Featherstone Lionesses took the U16s crown with a 14-10 victory over Orrell/Culcheth Eagles. Skye Robinson and Chloe Nash gave the Lionesses a 10-0 lead at the interval however an Eva Hunter double after the break saw the Eagles draw level.
With Golden Point Extra-Time on the horizon, Featherstone managed to ship the ball wide and eventually find Lilly Williams who crashed over for the match-winning try.
