Leigh Miners Rangers lifted the Women’s Championship following a hard-fought 10-6 victory over Barrow Raiders at Thatto Heath this past Sunday, live on Our League.
Following a 30-minute delay to kick-off due to the Barrow Raiders team bus being caught in traffic, it was the Raiders who opened the scoring as Jodie Litherland notched a penalty goal to give the Cumbrian side an early 0-2 lead.
As the closing stages of the first half approached, Leigh Miners interchange Lucy Johnson managed to power her way over with fullback Kirsty Millington adding the extras meaning the League Leaders went into the break 6-2 ahead.
It was Leigh Miners who got the better of the early second half arm-wrestle as they scored their second try of the afternoon. They worked the ball well to the right-hand side allowing Mackenzie Taylor to finish opening up an eight-point lead.
Barrow pushed hard to close the gap in the final 25 minutes of the game and set up a tense finish as Sam Norman scored out wide with just 12 minutes of the Grand Final remaining. However, Leigh Miners managed to repel a mountain of pressure in the final minutes before referee Phil Salisbury blew for full-time.
Leigh Miners Rangers loose forward and captain Mairead Quinn was awarded Player of the Match following an impressive display.
