Alex Walmsley breaks record in Saints' defeat of Leeds

Alex Walmsley won the Our League Player of the Match Award with an all-time record 81% of the vote as he helped St Helens overcome Leeds Rhinos 40-6 at the Totally Wicked Stadium on Friday night.

The England prop ran an. incredible 275 metres from 23 carries and made a mind-blowing 13 clean breaks, while scoring a try and providing the final pass for another.

Jack Welsby Tommy Makinson and Morgan Knowles helped turn the screw with a try each within a rampant six-minute spell either side of the 20-minute mark.

Then Walmsley's score arrived on 33 minutes to stretch the home side's lead further.

Brad Dwyer mustered Leeds' response just before half time, Rhyse Martin converting, but there was to be no dramatic comeback this week.

Sione Matautia crashed over on 47 minutes to all-but end the game as contest.

While the young Leeds side, who handed a second debut to Corey Johnson - who began the season playing in the National Conference League for Hunslet Club Parkside - did stand firm for much of the second period, no further points followed as Knowles scored his second try of the game with six minutes left to play to round off the scoring for Kristian Woolf's men.
