Hunslet’s chairman gets on his bike for Rob Burrow and MND

Hunslet’s chairman gets on his bike for Rob Burrow and MND

Chairman Kenny Sykes is determined to be part of Hunslet Rugby League club’s continuing efforts in support of the Rob Burrow fund and the Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience.

The south Leeds outfit’s next initiative is on Sunday week (30 May) when supporters will run (or walk) the 20 miles alongside the Leeds-Liverpool canal to that afternoon’s Betfred League 1 fixture at Keighley Cougars.

Chairman Sykes, who is a Hunslet Hall of Famer, felt that a 20-mile run might be pushing it a bit, however. So he is getting on his bike.

The 71-year-old said: “At my age it might be asking a bit much of my dickie hip to run there, but I wanted to do my bit to raise funds for MND and SITraN and show support for Rob.

“The Rugby League family has rallied for Rob because that is what we do. He was inspirational as a player and is even more inspirational now, that is the measure of the man.”

Kenny continued: “Motor neurone is a terrible disease and can strike anyone at any time. My old teammates `Grabsie’ Wilson and Mark Burgess were struck down by it and it also took Shaun, the young son of Stuart Keane, another former Parksider and a good friend. I’m proud of everyone for taking part in the event and I’m grateful to those who are supporting us.”

Anyone wishing to take part in the run can pay their £25 entry fee by visiting here.

Alternatively, those who are unable to partake in the 20-mile challenge but still want to show their support can take part in a 10k virtual challenge (for which the entry fee is £15, payable by visiting here.) by completing a 10k run in their local area on 29/30 May and posting their photograph on the Hunslet Facebook site.

All proceeds will be passed on to the Rob Burrow fund and SITraN; all runners and walkers (and in Kenny Sykes’ case, cyclist) will receive an `I Ran for Rob’ scarf.
