Castleford Academy 36-6 Astley High
By Dan Richardson
A game full of injuries but both sides put on a strong display with Castleford coming out on top with a 36-6 win in the Year 10 Girls Final.
Castleford opened the scoring in this match after a knock on by Astley gave them good field position. The Castleford number 11 Hollie-Mae Dodd went storming over for the first try which Kiera Bennett converted.
Just three minutes on and it was Emma Newbould who crashed over in the corner with Bennett again adding the two points. With a few injuries slowing down play, Astley eventually got into a good position due to a couple of superb line breaks. Cleo Evans took the chance to get her side’s first try with five minutes left of the half and Caitlyn Hutchinson was successful with the kick.
Before the whistle sounded for half time, Castleford’s Amy Derwanz scored to extend the lead with Bennett continuing her 100% goal kicking tally to make it 18-6 at half time. The second half was another injury filled half for Astley which meant they struggled to get out of their own half for long periods.
Castleford made them pay by scoring consecutive tries with both Newbould and Dodd grabbing their second tries and forward Olivia Addis crashing over just to the right of the sticks for another. All three tries were converted by Bennett who kicked six from six attempts putting the final score at 36-6.
