Champion Schools Year 9 Boys' final - The Brooksbank School v St Peter's Wigan
Brooksbank 16-6 St Peter's Orrell
By Dan Richardson
Man of the match and Brooksbank number eight Harvey Oldroyd racked up all his side’s points in a 16-6 win over Wigan St Peter's to crown Brooksbank as Year 9 Boys Champion Schools winners.
Brooksbank made a very quick start to the match with some solid defence in the opening minutes followed by an Oldroyd try but he failed to convert his own try. The Brooksbank side continued to pile on the pressure and came close to the line on numerous occasions but St Peters stayed firm with some brilliant goal line defence.
However, just minutes before the half time whistle Brooksbank converted one of their chances into points as Oldroyd went over for his second try of the game. He ensured to ground the ball down under the sticks in preparation for his conversion which he slotted over with ease. Brooksbank led 10-0 at half time with Oldroyd having scored all the points so far in the match.
An early second half mistake from Brooksbank gifted possession to St Peters but it was Brooksbank this time who put in a solid defensive display to keep out their opposition. St Peters got themselves back into the match after Ryan Wood got on the end of a kick to score, Tom Lee then added the two points making the score 10-6.
Half way through the second half St Peters went a man down after Matthew Makin was sin binned for a high tackle. Brooksbank capitalised on having the extra man as hat-trick hero Oldroyd broke through for his third try, he followed it up with a successful conversion putting his side 16-6 ahead.
Despite all their efforts St Peters failed to score another and Brooksbank took a deserved 16-6 win.
