SET OF SIX: This week in Rugby League

League return for Sonny Bill Williams?

Reports coming out of Australia are suggesting that Sonny Bill Williams could make a return to Rugby League once his deal with the All Blacks comes to an end in 2019.

Williams’ agent was spotted having a meeting with Roosters’ boss Nick Politis, fuelling the speculation that the former of Canerbury Bulldogs and more recently Sydney Roosters man, could once again switch codes and return to the NRL.

The hugely powerful front-rower is currently plying his trade in his native New Zealand with Super Rugby side Blues, who he joined at the start of the year.

Sensational finish in NRL Schoolboy Cup

If you enjoyed Jy Hitchcox’s incredible finish in Castleford’s win in Catalans a fortnight ago, then you’ll be even more impressed with this phenomenal score in the corner in the NRL Schoolboy Cup over in Australia.

After an impressive team-build-up by Palm Beach Currumbin State High, winger Bayley Desmond wins possession and pulls off a terrific gravity-defying finish for his side.

Desmond scored two tries as PBC progressed to the Queensland state quarter-finals of the cup as they defeated St Mary’s College.

And Desmond’s coach, Aaron Zimmerle, was left astounded with the effort, saying: “In 15 years of Schoolboys footy, I’ve never seen a try that good.”

He went onto tell Fox League: “Last year he came back and had a couple of knocks on it and so forth so he was fighting hard last year to get his speed back.”

Assist of the season?

From amazing tries to sensational assists, how about this phenomenal offload from Brisbane Broncos’ Tevita Pangai Junior to set up James Roberts.

The 21-year-old forward must have had eyes in the back of his head to offload backwards to send Roberts through, as Broncos went onto complete a 54-0 demolition of Gold Coast Titans.

Scotland announce World Cup train-on squad

Scotland head coach Steve McCormack has announced a 36-man provisional squad for this autumn’s Rugby League World Cup in Australia.

After an impressive Four Nations last year, which included a memorable draw with former World Champions New Zealand, Huddersfield Giants’ Danny Brough will once again captain the Bravehearts.

Dale Ferguson (Huddersfield), Liam Hood (Leigh), Luke Douglas (St Helens), Matty Russell (Warrington) and Lewis Tierney (Wigan/Catalans) are amongst the other Super League players included in the squad.

Jamaica and Netherlands to stage landmark Internationals

The growth of Rugby League in North America continues as Jamaica announced they will host their first-ever international, when they take on Canada in Kingston on August 26.

The Jamaica squad includes the likes of Bradford Bulls’ Ross Peltier, Batley Bulldogs trio Alex Brown, Joel Farrell and Wayne Rettie and Mo Agoro who has scored 16 tries for University of Gloucestershire All Golds in League 1 this year.

Meanwhile, Netherlands have announced that they will take on Sweden on September 9, with Amsterdam hosting an international match for the very first time. They will also play away to Germany on August 26.
